The First Exhibition, in the Place it all Started

Haikyuu!!

The first ever Haikyu!! exhibit is taking place from April 15 to April 29, 2018 at the Kamei Arena Sendai. Titled “Haikyu!! Exhibition Genga x Taikan,” the exhibit allows fans of all ages to enjoy volleyball like the characters from  Haruichi Furudate’s the hit manga series. Haikyu!!, a shōnen manga written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate and currently running in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, takes place in Miyagi prefecture and many key chapters take place in Kamei Arena Sendai, formally called the Sendai City Gymnasium. In this spirit, the exhibit’s catch copy reads, “The First Exhibition, in the Place it all Started.”

The exhibit displays over 450 pieces of artwork and pages from the manga, new original illustrations, and showcases Haikyu‘s top three storyboards. According to the exhibit, the number one best storyboard is Chapter 146 “Talent and Sense “(才能とセンス), followed by Chapter 163 “Full Moon” (月の輪) in second place and Chapter 224 “Return” (返還) in third place.

“Haikyuu!! Exhibition Genga x Taikan” doesn’t limit itself to the two-dimensional world of high school volleyball. On April 14,  five high school volleyball teams from Miyagi, Niigata, Iwate, Yamaguchi, and Fukushima participated in a special tournament hosted by the exhibit, giving Haikyuu!! fans a chance to see real volleyball in action. Stage actors Kenta Suga (Hinata Shouyou) and Tatsuya Kageyama (Tobio Kageyama) appeared at the exhibit’s opening ceremony held on April 14. Local elementary students also attended volleyball lessons at Kamei Arena Sendai in conjunction with the Haikyu! events on April 15, and on April 27 Shueisha and the Sendai City Volleyball Committee are sponsoring a volleyball tournament for the Miyagi Prefecture Women’s Home Volleyball teams.
