Celebrate with the Kiryu Spirit!

Kiryu Yagibushi Festival
If you’re in the Gunma area, you can join this massive crowd in Kiryu City.

Kiryu City in Gunma Prefecture, the setting for Manga Planet’s original series The Silk Weaver’s Apprentice and the Kiryu Spirit, will be holding the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival on August 3, 4 and 5, 2018. Around 500,000 people attend every year, making it one of the biggest events in the Joshu area.

Over the years, towns around Kiryu celebrated local industries and eventually combined to create the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival in 1964. Yagibushi, the traditional folk dance of Gunma Prefecture, gained popularity in Kiryu around the Taisho Era when it was a prosperous textile city. During the festival, yagibushi takes center stage, but visitors can also expect to see yatai floats and array of food booths.

Some of the largest in the Kanto region, these traditional floats are passed down from generation to generation in each town.
