This year marks the 30th anniversary of Taiyō Matsumoto’s debut as a manga artist. Well-known as an artist that explores male beauty and aesthetics with a distinct touch with sports and fighting manga, Matsumoto has gained worldwide acclaim and created visually original and memorable manga like Ping Pong, Tekkonkinkreet, and Sunny. To celebrate his remarkable career as an artist, Shibuya LOFT is holding the Taiyō Matsumoto’s ~30th Anniversary Exhibit~ from July 7 to 20, 2018 on the 6th floor.

Taiyō Matsumoto’s ~30th Anniversary Exhibit~ Photo Report

At the exhibit, fans have the opportunity to see a reproduction of Matsumoto’s original artwork and purchase limited edition goods. According to LOFT staff, fans swarmed the exhibition during the opening weekend and spent a leisurely time gazing at the artwork and browsing the vast array of goods.

Ping Pong at the Taiyō Matsumoto’s ~30th Anniversary Exhibit~

Many anime and manga fans might already be familiar with Ping Pong, Matsumoto’s seinen manga series initially serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits from 1996 to 1997. This manga series became a live-action film in 2002 and an anime produced by Tatsunoko Productions and directed by Masaaki Yuasa in 2014.

Matsumoto doesn’t only write sports manga. From 2006 to 2010, Matsumoto illustrated Takemitsu Zamurai, a seinen manga written by Issei Eifuku that follows the story of masterless samurai Senō Sōichirō. Takemitsu Zamurai won the Grand Prize for the 15th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2011.

The exhibit featured 14 reproduced illustrations from Matsumoto’s many manga series. All of these pieces are available for pre-orders and will be sent in November. (However, these illustrations cannot be sent overseas.)

  • Taiyō Matsumoto Exhibition stamp rally

Fans can participate in a stamp rally at the exhibit. Following the Loft exhibit, TOBICHI will hold a 5-day Taiyō Matsumoto Exhibition and Live Painting and find the second half of the stamp.

LOFT will give fans who make purchases that total over 3,240 yen an original postcard by Matsumoto.

The exhibit also features a timeline of Matsumoto’s career in manga. Matsumoto made his debut with STRAIGHT, a seinen baseball manga originally published in Kodansha’s Morning magazine.

Though it ends on July 20 in Tokyo, LOFT Nagoya will host the Taiyō Matsumoto’s ~30th Anniversary Exhibit~ from August 7 to 27 and Umeda LOFT from September 5 to 25.
